A Clinical Study of 50 Cases of Thyroid Nodules

Abstract
This report represents a clinical study of 50 cases of thyroid nodules which were treated by surgical excision and confirmed pathologically at the Department of Surgery, Korea University-Hospit4l from Jan. 1971 to June 1975.
The following results are obtained.
1. Of 50 cases, 41 cases (82%) were benign and 9 cases (18%) were malignant.
2. The sex distribution was 98% in female and 2% in male. The age distribution was from,
16 to 66 years in age and the largest distribution was 48% in 2nd-4th decades. Also, in malignant lesion, the largest distribution was 44.4% in 5th-6th decades.
3. The chief physical symptoms and signs were palpable nodule, palpitation and headache. 4. The solitary nodules were 41 cases (88%) and 22 cases were located in right lobe.
5. In thyroidal uptake of radioactive iodine, 31 cases (62%) were normal range, 11 cases (22
%) were higher than normal range and 8 cases (16%) were lower than normal range.
6. In the radiodine scanning, 44 cases (88%) were cold nodules, 5 cases (10%) were warm nodules and 1 case (2%) was hot nodule.
7. 9 cases (20.9%) of 43 solitary nodules were carcinomas.
8. In histological distribution of benign legion in order of frequency, 23 cases (56%) were adenomas, 9 cases (22%) were nodular goiters; 3 cases (7.3%) were diffuse goiters and 2 cases. (4.9%) were cysts.
In 9 cases of malignant lesion, 5 cases (55.6%) were papillary adenocarcinoma, 2 cases (22.2 %) were follicular adenocarcinomar, 1 cases (11. 1%) was squamous cell carcinoma and 1 cases (11. 1%) was undifferentiated carcinoma.
9. Of 9 cases of the malignant lesion, 2 cases (22.2%) were lymph node metastasis.
10. The postoperative compications were hypoparathyrodism, wound infection and paralysis of recurrent laryngeal nerve.
